About Relampago, Texas
Relampago is a community of 129 people in Hidalgo County, Texas. Its first resident was Cirildo Hinojosa, a son of Vicente Hinojosa, and by 1852 a small settlement had grown up on the land. That same year Thaddeus Rhodes of Brownsville bought a strip that reached fifteen miles north of the river, and the purchase set the course of the place for the next decade.
- Named for a lightning flashRhodes went into business with José María Mora, and in 1856 the two men started the Relampago Ranch as co-owners. The town grew up under the ranch's name. Relámpago is the Spanish and Portuguese word for a flash of lightning.
- A port of entry by 1860By 1860 Rhodes had put up a ranch house on the property, along with a port of entry half a mile from the river. He ran it himself, serving as the deputy collector and inspector for goods crossing there.
- Forty-three pupils in 1896In 1896 a school named Relampago had one teacher for forty-three students. Children from Relampago now attend the Mercedes Independent School District, and magnet schools run by the South Texas Independent School District also serve the community.
