About Bonner-West Riverside, Montana

The community is named for Edward L. Bonner, who headed the Missoula and Bitter Root Valley Railroad. He was a partner as well in Eddy, Hammond and Company, which supplied lumber to the Northern Pacific. The partners started the Montana Improvement Company, which built a sawmill there in 1886. Neighboring Milltown is named for the mill.

On January 16, 1919, fire burned much of the Bonner mill to the ground. It was called Western Montana's greatest fire. The mill was rebuilt and running again by September 1919.
