About East Missoula, Montana

East Missoula is an unincorporated community of 2,465 people in Missoula County, with the city of Missoula on its west side and the Clark Fork River on its east. Its population has grown from 2,157 in 2010. The town began in 1908 as a planned subdivision, laid out by two real estate men and sold one lot at a time.

  • A land company in 1908On August 1, 1908, two partners, R.E. Glass of Spokane and B.M. Francis, a Missoula man, started the East Missoula Land Company. They worked out of offices in the Florence Hotel building, split 175 acres into 766 lots and priced every lot the same: $70.
  • Banking on the railroadFrancis and Glass sold the new town on what was coming. The Milwaukee Railroad was on its way, and buyers expected Marcus Daly to finish his streetcar line from Bonner to Missoula, which would put East Missoula right on the route.
  • Nearly 500 lots by August's endThe partners said buyers took half the lots within two weeks of the company's start. By the end of August 1908, they claimed, nearly 500 of the 766 lots had sold.
