About Boomer, West Virginia

Boomer is a community of 599 people in Fayette County, on the Kanawha River's north bank, about 2 miles southeast of Smithers. It took its name from Boomer Branch Creek, which runs close by. In the early 1900s the Boomer Coal & Coke Company dug four drift mines in Boomer Hollow. The jobs there drew many local men, along with Italian immigrants who settled in the town and raised families.

  • The 1915 mine explosionOn November 30, 1915, an explosion ripped through the Number 2 Mine and killed 23 miners. Another 27 men survived by sealing themselves into a part of the mine that still had fresh air, and rescuers brought them out seven hours after the blast.
  • Four drift minesBy the 1926 History of Fayette County, the coal company kept its office in Boomer, which lay in Falls district beside the K. & M. railroad. The company's four drift mines were known as No. 4, No. 8, and the two halves of No. 2, called North and South.
  • The oil train fire of 2015On February 16, 2015, a C&O train of two locomotives and 109 rail cars, loaded with crude oil, left the tracks and erupted into a fireball. Boomer and neighboring Adena Village were both evacuated. The fire destroyed one home and badly damaged others in the two communities, and oil that poured into the Kanawha River burned on the water for more than half a mile.
