About Deep Water, West Virginia

Deep Water is a community of 183 people in Fayette County, on the Kanawha River just below Kanawha Falls. For much of its past the name was written as one word, Deepwater, and the 2010 census had counted 280 people here before the 2020 count.

The town sits near the head of navigation on the Kanawha, a short way downstream from the falls, with Mount Carbon just below it. A new post office stood along Loup Creek in 1871, and in 1898 a railroad set out from the town toward the coalfields of the region.

“Next above Mount Carbon comes the town of Deepwater, so named because of the fact that steamboats can proceed up the river this far.”
History of Fayette County, 1926
  • The Deepwater Railway, 1898William N. Page founded the Deepwater Railway in 1898, and the line started here at Deep Water. In 1907 it was merged into a new company, the Virginian Railway.
  • A rainy day in 1871A local legend, told by H. Reid in his 1961 book The Virginian Railway, says Squire James Galsepy Kincaid and his neighbors picked the name in 1871. Rain had left water standing on the ground outside the new post office on Loup Creek, and the name was their comment on it.
