About Boykin, Alabama

Boykin is also called Gee's Bend, a name that honors Joseph Gee of Halifax County, North Carolina. He settled in this deep bend of the Alabama River in 1816. Gee brought 18 enslaved African Americans and started a cotton plantation there.

In 1937 the federal Resettlement Administration bought over 10,000 acres, including Pettway's old plantation. It split the acreage into farms and rented them to 92 families. A nurse, a school, a store and a cooperative cotton gin followed. In the 1940s many families bought their farms from the government.
