About Brandon, Montana
Brandon is a small mining community in Madison County, Montana, set in the valley of Mill Creek at the western foot of the Tobacco Root Mountains. Mill Creek Road leads 3 miles southwest from Brandon to Sheridan, in the Ruby Valley.
Brandon grew from a gold strike. In 1864 a few prospectors found pay dirt along Mill Creek, and before long the Toledo mine, first spelled Toleda, was working alongside the Tamarack and a score of others. The money those mines brought in paid for the 12-stamp Brandon Mill, which went up in 1865.
- Three mining boomsBrandon rose and fell with the mines along Mill Creek through three separate booms. At its busiest it held about 300 people, with a boardinghouse, two blacksmith shops and several saloons serving the miners.
- Counted on its own in 2020The Census Bureau first listed Brandon as a census-designated place for the 2020 census, which counted 46 people here. Brandon's children go to school in nearby Sheridan, in the Sheridan elementary and high school districts.
