About Pony, Montana

Pony is a community of 127 people in Madison County, where the Tobacco Root Mountains meet the plains to the east. Miners were working this ground in the 1860s, and by 1875 a settlement named Pony had grown up to supply them. The name came from Tecumseth Smith, an early miner whose small build earned him the nickname "Pony."

Gold made the town rich. By the 1880s the Boss Tweed and Clipper mines were turning out fortunes in ore, and at its height Pony held at least 5,000 residents. Mining slowed after 1910 and every mine had shut down by 1922, so the town turned to serving the farms and ranches around it.

  • The railroad arrived in 1890The Northern Pacific Railroad brought its Red Bluff and Pony branch line into town in 1890. Within five years the boom town counted two hotels, a public hall, a school and many businesses.
  • Kept by the Homecoming ClubMany buildings from Pony's mining boom still stand in the old town. The Pony Homecoming Club, a volunteer nonprofit, looks after the major ones and cares for the town's public spaces.
  • On North Willow CreekNorth Willow Creek runs through Pony on its way northeast, and it joins the Jefferson River south of Three Forks. Pony Road, Montana Highway 283, follows the valley 6 miles northeast to U.S. Route 287 at Harrison.
