About Norris, Montana

Norris is a community of 46 people in northeastern Madison County, Montana, where U.S. Route 287 meets Montana Highway 84. Several mining districts opened in the area during the 1860s, though most of them lasted only a short time. In September 1865 Alexander Norris put up the first house in what would grow into the town that carries his name.

Norris sold only a few lots in the new town, because he put most of his energy into building up his own ranch. Ranching has shaped the place ever since, and the hilly, fairly dry land around Norris is still used for farming and cattle, with the Tobacco Root Mountains rising to the west.

  • End of the line in 1890In 1890 the Northern Pacific Railroad built a branch line that ended at Norris. The railroad made the town a place where cattle ranchers brought their herds to ship, and it still serves them that way today, even though the branch line itself was later abandoned.
  • Norris Hot SpringsNorris Hot Springs sits beside Hot Springs Creek, 0.4 miles east of town, and draws many visitors. The creek flows east through the community and joins the Madison River past Red Bluff.
  • A research ranch at Red BluffAt Red Bluff, 2.5 miles east of Norris on Highway 84, Montana State University in Bozeman keeps a ranch where it tests farming methods. The university calls it the Red Bluff Research Ranch and runs it as an agricultural experiment station.
