About Jeffers, Montana

Jeffers is a community of 25 people in Madison County, Montana, on the east side of the Madison River valley. By road it sits 2 miles east of Ennis, which lies across the river on the west side. The town carries the name of Myron D. Jeffers, who first came to Alder Gulch in 1864 to work hauling freight.

  • Beef for the minersThe miners at Alder Gulch needed a steady supply of beef, and Jeffers set out to provide it. Between 1869 and 1871 he traveled to Texas, bought cattle there and drove the herds back to Montana Territory.
  • First postmaster in 1903Myron Jeffers died in May 1900. Three years later, in 1903, the new town that bore his name opened a post office, and his widow, Florence Switzer Jeffers, took charge of it as its first postmaster.
