About Harrison, Montana

Harrison is a community of 105 people in Madison County, set in the Willow Creek Valley. Henry C. Harrison settled in the valley in 1865, close to Ferguson, a place where stagecoaches stopped on their way to Virginia City.

In 1889 the Northern Pacific Railroad built a branch line here, and the new railroad stop raised a question about what to call the town. For 16 years people could not agree whether their home was Ferguson or Harrison. In the end the early settler's name won out, and the town is still called Harrison.

  • Between two Willow CreeksThe town lies between North Willow Creek and South Willow Creek. The two streams run northeast and join to make Willow Creek, which feeds the Jefferson River. Willow Creek Reservoir sits 4 miles east of town.
  • Home of the WildcatsHarrison Public School teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade, and 95 of them were enrolled in the 2021-2022 school year. Its high school teams are the Wildcats, and the school also runs its own radio station, KHWC-LP.
  • Still ranch countryHarrison has kept its ranching heritage. U.S. Route 287 runs through town, linking it to Three Forks, 20 miles northeast, and to Ennis, 26 miles south. The 2020 census counted 105 people, down from 137 in 2010.
