About Brawley, California

Brawley is a city of 26,416 people in Imperial County, in the Imperial Valley, where the ground lies below sea level. In 1902 the Imperial Land Company platted the townsite on land that J. H. Braly owned. Mr. Heber wanted to call it Braly in his honor, but Braly would not allow it, so Heber named the town Brawley after a friend in Chicago.

The first post office opened in 1903. When the city incorporated in 1908, its 100 residents still lived in tents and worked on the railroads or the valley's first farms. Irrigated fields soon spread across the desert around it, and by 1950 the city had grown to 11,922 people.

  • 2501 cars of cantaloupesBy 1918 Brawley was ranked the second shipping point in California. In the season before the county history was written, the valley sent out 4400 carloads of cantaloupes, and almost 3000 came from the Brawley district, with 2501 loaded at Brawley station. The town also shipped 279 of the valley's 385 cars of lettuce.
  • New schools by 1918The young town spent $70,000 on a high school building and $35,000 on a new grammar school. It also ran a manual training program, three smaller school buildings and a parochial school.
  • Home of the Cattle Call RodeoCattle and feed are still a large business in Brawley, and the city holds the Cattle Call Rodeo every year. As early as 1918, the county history said the Brawley district beat every other part of the valley and the state for dairying.
  • 122 degrees in 1950Brawley's record high of 122 Β°F came on July 1, 1950. Its record low, 4 Β°F, came on January 1, 1919, and a rare storm in December 1932 left 3.0 inches of snow on the town.
