About Breinigsville, Pennsylvania

Breinigsville is a census-designated place of 7,495 people in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County. It carries the name of the Breinig family. George Ludwig Breinig, a German immigrant, reached Philadelphia aboard the ship Lydia on October 13, 1749, and in 1771 he paid Peter and Catherine Trexler 700 pounds for about 100 acres and a stone house. His youngest son, Peter, founded the village on a 123-acre farm and opened a tavern, which became the heart of the community.

In the early 1800s the village grew into a center for iron ore mining, and the mines kept many men at work. Crews graded a line through town for the Allentown Railroad around 1855, but no tracks were laid until the 1860s, when the Catasauqua and Fogelsville Railroad used that grade for a branch from Trexlertown to the limonite mines. The mines had closed by the end of World War I, so the line was abandoned, its rails came out in the 1940s, and farming became the main work.

  • A colonel of the RevolutionGeorge Breinig was a judge of the July 8, 1776, election at Allentown that chose delegates to Pennsylvania's first constitutional convention. In the war he was colonel of the Second Battalion, Northampton County militia, and in 1786 he became a justice for Macungie and Weisenberg townships. The 1914 county history says he settled on a 123-acre tract here in 1789. He died May 12, 1812, and his grave lies in the cemetery of Zion Lehigh Lutheran Church at Alburtis.
  • Church and carriage worksBy 1914 Breinigsville had a post office, a hotel, a single store and a single school. A depot handled lumber, coal and grain, and a shop built carriages. The village's United Brethren congregation had put up a church on the west side of town in 1880. Its membership topped out near 40, and regular services ended in 1912.
  • A two-room schoolhouseThe village schoolhouse, built in the mid-1800s, had two rooms. Miss Edith Walbert taught the older pupils there, and Mr. John Shoemaker taught the younger ones. The school closed long ago, but the building is still standing.
  • Bell Labs came in 1987AT&T bought about 137 acres here in 1987, and the site, called TEK Park, became Bell Labs' world headquarters for optoelectronics research. The research center split off into Lucent Technologies in the late 1990s and into Agere Systems in 2002, and TriQuint Semiconductor bought it in 2003. MRA Group paid $50 million for TEK Park in 2012.
  • From farms to warehousesCheaper land and a short trip to New York drew major distributors here starting in the late 1970s and 80s. Amazon, Home Depot, Uline and a Nestlé water bottling plant now run large sites in Breinigsville, and in 2007 Lightning Source opened a 130,000 square foot printing and shipping plant. Nurseries, greenhouses and vineyards such as Clover Hill still keep the farming past alive.
