About Briceville, Tennessee
Briceville was first called Slatestone Hollow. In 1888, Ohio senator Calvin Brice had a rail spur built to link it with Coal Creek. Once that line was done, the community took his name. By 1910 it was the largest community in Anderson County.
On December 9, 1911, an explosion struck Cross Mountain Mine at Briceville's far west end. It killed or trapped 89 miners. The Bureau of Mines led a rescue effort that freed five men. Several who died rest together in a ring known as the Cross Mountain Miners' Circle.
