About Bridgeton, Indiana
The Bridgeton mills were built about 1823. The mill changed hands several times and finally burned down. The next fall the people held a frolic, cut logs and built a new mill. When it burned again in 1869, a four-story mill costing fourteen thousand dollars replaced it.
Bridgeton grew up around a mill that cracked corn on the banks of the Big Raccoon. Nathaniel Smock opened a store there. James and Mary Searing later platted the town. They named it for the bridge across the creek at that point.
