About Broadmoor, California

Broadmoor is an unincorporated community of 4,411 people in San Mateo County. Daly City surrounds it on every side. Farms covered this ground for a long time. From the 1940s on, new housing tracts took their place.

The new homeowners soon wanted better police coverage. The county sheriff worked out of Redwood City, nearly twenty miles away, and help was slow to come. So residents asked the county for a police district of their own. The Board of Supervisors created the Broadmoor Police Protection District on December 21, 1948.

  • Policing Colma tooIn 1957 the Broadmoor district began running ambulance and radio dispatch for the Town of Colma. In 1964 it added police patrols and investigations there. Broadmoor's officers served both towns for nearly twenty years. That ended in 1976, when Colma set up its own department.
  • Holding off Daly CityDaly City took the land around Broadmoor piece by piece until it surrounded the community. Along the way it took slices of Broadmoor, even its police headquarters. Residents rallied around their police district and their pride as a separate place. They have mostly kept Broadmoor out of Daly City, though the two have not always gotten along.
  • City police status in 2007The Broadmoor department asked State Senator Leland Yee for help, and he wrote Senate Bill 230. Governor Schwarzenegger signed it. The law gave the Broadmoor Police the same legal standing as a city police department. Three police commissioners run the district, and residents elect them every four years.
