About Brogden, North Carolina
Brogden is a community of 2,510 people in Wayne County, North Carolina, a short drive north of Dudley along U.S. 117. The Brogden family, Quakers with English roots, settled this part of the county in colonial times, and the community still carries their name. The family went on to give the state many well-known figures, and one of them, Curtis H. Brogden, became governor of North Carolina.
- Ten schools became one in 1926In 1926 the county built a new consolidated school here and named it for the Brogden family. The Norwoods of Goldsboro donated a piece of their Peach-A-Rena farm as the site. Students from ten smaller schools moved into the new building. Those schools were Casey, Dudley, Emmaus, Hillcrest, Kornegay, Pinecrest, Roberts, Salem, Thunder Swamp and White.
- Two academies came firstBrogden School grew out of older schools in the area. One was the Everettsville Academy, a fashionable school founded before the Civil War. The other was the Woodland Academy, a large boarding school run by Quakers since 1878.
