About Brookfield, New York

Captain Daniel Brown of Connecticut brought the first family to settle in Brookfield. They arrived in June 1791 after 21 days behind an ox team, when he was 66. On July 4 he began clearing his land with his ax. It is counted as the first Fourth of July celebration in Madison County.

Captain Brown's daughter Desire once sat on a rock in the woods and called out just to hear the echo. To her surprise, a voice answered. It was surveyor John I. Morgan and his party, who then stayed with the Browns while they surveyed.
