About the Town of Hamilton, New York

Hamilton was once known as Payne's Corners. The town was set off from Paris in 1795 and took the name of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. In 1890, a Masonic order known as the Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm was founded here.

New Englanders settled the village of Hamilton, and it was incorporated in 1816. They built it around a green like those back home. Colgate University's main quadrangle uses local golden buff sandstone. Two early dormitories are West Hall, from 1827, and East Hall, from 1834.
