About Sherburne, New York

Sherburne is a town of 3,973 people in Chenango County, where the Chenango River runs south across the county's northern edge. The Oneida people lived in this valley until the late 1780s, when New York bought the land from them and later sold the parcels at auction in New York City. Most of Sherburne's first settlers came from Kent, in Litchfield County, Connecticut. Around 1785 or 1786 they moved to Duanesburgh, but they could never secure title to the land there, so they agreed to move together once more to the Chenango Valley.

In June 1791 an exploring party that included Deacon Nathaniel Gray, Joel Hatch and three Raymonds looked over the southwest quarter of the 9th township, 6,222 acres that the group later bought from Colonel William S. Smith. They came back in the summer of 1792 to prepare the land, and the advance company of families arrived on a Saturday night in March 1793. The settlers organized the Congregational Church of Sherburne on July 6, 1794, and the town was formed from Paris in 1795.

  • Named for a hymn tuneDaniel Read wrote a tune called "Sherburne" in 1783. The early settlers loved it and sang it so often that their new town took its name.
  • New bread and beerWhen the 1791 exploring party reached Handsome Brook, they found that a family from Paris had moved onto the land only a few hours earlier and was living in a bark cabin. The family took the strangers in for the night, and in the morning the woman of the house served them bread and beer she had made herself. The family soon moved on and was gone before the explorers came back.
  • The first sermon in 1792The Rev. Blackleach Burritt, a Congregational minister during the American Revolution, was the spiritual leader of the Kent families who settled Sherburne. He gave the new settlement its first sermon in 1792.
  • Canal, camp and railroadThe Chenango Canal opened in 1837 between Utica and Binghamton and ran straight through the middle of Sherburne, so goods and supplies arrived faster and for less money. During the Civil War, Union soldiers camped on its banks, on the ground where Westlake Village stands now. The railroad took the canal's place in 1867, with two trains passing through town every day.
