About New Berlin, New York
New Berlin is a town of 2,525 people in Chenango County, in central New York, on the county's eastern edge northeast of Norwich. The first European-American settlers arrived around 1790, after the Revolutionary War. In 1807 the Town of Norwich was divided, and its new eastern part became New Berlin, named after Berlin, Germany. In 1853 some of New Berlin's land was taken to form the Town of Sherburne, and the village of New Berlin remains inside the town.
- Lancaster for one yearIn 1821 the town gave up its first name and became Lancaster. The change didn't last, and the very next year the town went back to being New Berlin, the name it has kept ever since.
- On the Unadilla RiverThe Unadilla River marks New Berlin's eastern town line and the border with Otsego County. The river flows south to join the Susquehanna, and the village of New Berlin sits right on that line in the northeastern part of the town.
- Hunts Pond, park to forestHunts Pond lies in the east-central part of the town and was once run as a state park. Since 2011 it has been managed as part of Hunts Pond State Forest.
