About the Village of Hamilton, New York
Elisha Payne and settlers from Whitestone and Connecticut moved onto this unsettled land. Because Payne worked so hard to build it up, people called it Payne's Settlement. In 1802 he opened a tavern that later became the Park House hotel. Early settlers even used salt as money.
Payne's Settlement boomed from 1800 through the War of 1812, selling crops to Europe and provisions to New York at high wartime prices. In 1812 it won a charter as the Village of Hamilton. Colgate University was founded here in 1819, and its campus sits on what was Samuel Payne's farm.
