About Eaton, New York
Eaton is a town of 4,284 people in Madison County, in the south-central part of the county. Long before settlers came, this land was the main home of the Oneida, an Iroquois nation that sided with the colonists during the American Revolution. Euro-American families began arriving around 1792, and in 1807 Eaton was split off from the town of Hamilton to become a town of its own.
- Named for William EatonThe town took its name from William Eaton, an officer in the Revolution who later led the United States forces in Tripoli.
- The center of New YorkThe geographic center of the state lies in Eaton's northeastern corner, near Pratts Hollow. The Pratts Hollow United Methodist Church marks the spot.
- Where the Chenango beginsThe Chenango River starts in Eaton and flows south to join the Susquehanna. Blue Creek drains the northeast part of town the opposite way, north into Oneida Creek and on toward Lake Ontario.
- MorrisvilleMorrisville, in the northwest, is the largest community in the town. Three of its best-known places carry the village name: Morrisville State College, an equine center run by the college, and a state fish hatchery.
