About Brookhaven, Georgia

Brookhaven is a city of 56,795 people in western DeKalb County, just northeast of Atlanta, on land where Creek people once lived. John Evins started a plantation here around 1810, and in the 1830s two brothers from South Carolina, Harris and Solomon Goodwin, came to own the land. When the Atlanta and Richmond railway built a station here in 1873, it was called Goodwin's. The Goodwin home and family graveyard survive on Peachtree Road, in its 3900 block, close to Dresden Drive.

The area first became a city in 1924, under the name North Atlanta. In 1963 its leaders wanted voters to approve a new charter, and the legislature allowed the vote but added a second choice: ending the city altogether. Most voters picked that option, so the charter was dissolved in 1965. The Census Bureau kept counting North Atlanta as a census-designated place through 2010.

“Cotton and wood form the chief exports. About 140 bales of cotton shipped per annum, most of which is carried to Atlanta by wagon.”

  • Cross Keys in 1876A mile north of Goodwin's along the railroad, the settlement of Cross Keys had 250 people in 1876. Nancy's Creek powered its mill, and by 1879 it had a Methodist church, a Baptist church, a common school and steam cotton gins. That old crossroads, at Ashford Dunwoody and Johnson Ferry Roads, is now the restaurant and shopping center of North Brookhaven.
  • A golf course in 1912Atlanta families were building summer cottages here by about 1900. In 1910, 150 acres north of Peachtree Road were bought for homes planned around a golf course. Herbert Barker, a Long Island golf pro from Garden City, laid out nine holes that opened in 1912. Those homes, Historic Brookhaven, gave the city its name.
  • The Capital City Club courseThe golf club merged with the downtown Capital City Club in 1911. Its course grew to eighteen holes in 1915, and in 1928 it got a French Provincial clubhouse by Preston Stevens.
  • A city again in 2012Talk of making Brookhaven a city began in 2007, so local people could decide planning, zoning, police, fire and parks instead of the county, but the idea stalled. State Rep. Mike Jacobs revived it in 2011 with a bill to create the city. On July 31, 2012, 55% of voters approved it, and Brookhaven became DeKalb County's 11th city on December 17, 2012. That December, J. Max Davis was elected its first mayor.
