About Brushton, New York

Appleton Foote built the first mills in the town at Brushton in 1803. Benjamin Seeley and his family came with him to help, and they became the town's first settlers. They spent the first winter alone there. They also kept simple lodging for the many travelers bound for new settlements in St. Lawrence County.

Henry N. Brush bought the mills on the Little Salmon River in 1835. The site became known as Brush's Mills. The hamlet officially became Brushton on October 1, 1877. Brush held large tracts of land, and he drove much of the local business growth until he died in 1872.

  • A local inventorHenry Corbin Brush, the son of Henry N. Brush, was born at Brush's Mills in 1838. He grew up to invent the Brush Trolling Spoon, a fishing lure that swims close to the surface.
  • How the village got its nameBrushton took its name from Henry N. Brush, an extensive property owner.
