About Fort Covington, New York

The village is named for Brigadier General Leonard Covington. He was killed in 1813 when General James Wilkinson's army lost the Battle of Chryslers Field, across the border. Wilkinson's troops came back to the fort here for the winter. Some of them died of cold and hunger. The British captured the fort in 1814.

Settlers from southern Canada and Vermont came in the 1790s to work in the mills along the Salmon River. Their village was first called French Mills. It took the name Fort Covington in 1817.
