About Buena Vista, Virginia
Buena Vista is an independent city of 6,641 people near the western base of the Blue Ridge, on the east bank of the Maury River. A survey made in 1863 found only about six buildings on the site, among them the Paxton and Majors properties, and each had a mill on the river, which people then called the North River. Until 1888 people called the site Green Valley, Green Forest or Hart's Bottom.
Benjamin C. Moomaw founded the town around a tannery where two railroads, the Richmond and Alleghany and the Shenandoah Valley, met the old James River Canal, which by then supplied water power. In December 1888 he wrote the Buena Vista Prospectus and offered stock, and every share sold within 30 days for $400,000. The town was chartered in 1890, and on February 15, 1892, a city charter made it independent of Rockbridge County.
“one of the many new towns that seem to have sprung up as if by magic in some parts of Virginia.”
- A boom from 1889 to 1892Reports of a large iron ore deposit on February 22, 1889, set off a boom that lasted until March 4, 1892. In those three years Buena Vista gained an opera house, a luxury hotel, two banks, an electric light plant, a glass foundry, a steel factory and an iron furnace, along with plants making paper, saddles, cashmere, wagons, egg crates, furniture and boilers. The 1890 Buena Vista Hotel is now Main Hall at Southern Virginia University.
- The flood of August 20, 1969Rain from the remains of Hurricane Camille pushed the Maury River to 31.23 feet on the Buena Vista gauge, the highest ever recorded on the lower river, and downtown stood under more than 5 feet of water. The river rose again in 1985, when Hurricane Juan helped soak western Virginia, and in 1995. The James C. Olin Flood Control Project, finished in 1997, built a 2.5-mile levee wall with the River Walk trail running along its top.
- A courthouse turned libraryWhen the city's original courthouse was threatened with demolition, local citizens stepped in to save it and had it converted into Buena Vista's public library. Known today as the A.B. Modine Memorial Library, the Old Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- A World Series managerCharlie Manuel lived in Buena Vista and starred in several sports at Parry McCluer High School. He went on to play in the major leagues and in Japan during the 1960s and 1970s, and later managed the Philadelphia Phillies to a World Series championship.
