About Buies Creek, North Carolina

Buies Creek is a community in Harnett County, about 5 miles east of Lillington, the county seat, and it is the home of Campbell University. It shares its name with Buies Creek, a stream that runs through the community and feeds the Cape Fear River.

James Archibald Campbell, a local Baptist minister who had graduated from Wake Forest College, opened Buies Creek Academy on January 5, 1887. Its first class held only twenty-one male students. The school kept growing, and by 1898 the academy counted three buildings and over sixty pupils. That small academy is the school that became Campbell University.

  • The fire of 1900On December 20, 1900, fire swept the campus and destroyed every wooden building except a large tabernacle. Zachary Taylor Kivett, a local businessman, found Campbell downcast after the blaze and promised on the spot to put up a new building of brick. It was finished in 1903 and named for Kivett, and it still stands as the oldest building on the campus.
  • A town from 1914 to 1967The North Carolina General Assembly granted the wooded hamlet a town charter in 1914. That charter was repealed in 1967, and Buies Creek is now a census-designated place in Neills Creek Township. It counted 3,253 people in 2020, up from 2,942 in 2010.
