About Bull Valley, Illinois
Bull Valley is a McHenry County village whose rural, low-density character reflects decades of organized land-use advocacy. Neighbors formed the Countryside Improvement Association in 1942, and its successor promoted the incorporation referendum that passed on July 23, 1977. The 2020 census recorded 1,128 residents.
- Early Land ProtectionIn 1955, owners voluntarily placed about 3,000 acres, then half of the Bull Valley area, under 3-acre zoning.
- Unusual Village BoundariesIllinois law required at least 200 voters within two square miles, prompting incorporation organizers to include scattered households.
- Historic Stickney HouseVillage government occupies Stickney House, an early brick building designed without corners because the Stickneys believed evil spirits could inhabit them.
- Mostly LandThe 2010 census measured Bull Valley at 8.761 square miles, with 99.87 percent classified as land.
