About Bullhead City, Arizona
Bullhead City is a city of 41,348 people in Mohave County, on the Arizona side of the Colorado River across from Laughlin, Nevada. In March 1864 this ground held Hardyville, a settlement named for William Harrison Hardy, an entrepreneur from New York. Backed by George Alonzo Johnson's steamboat company, Hardy started a ferry and a steamboat landing at the spot where the Mojave Road met the river.
Steamboats called there from 1864 to 1883, bringing supplies for nearby mines and hauling their ore away. Hardyville became the Mohave County seat in 1867 and had 20 people in 1870, but the seat went to Cerbat in 1873. Railroads then pulled the mining trade elsewhere, the post office closed on February 19, 1883, and by the early 1890s the mill sat idle and the last residents had gone. The building of Davis Dam, from 1942 to 1953, brought the town back to life under a new name.
“Hardyville itself was then more of a name than place, consisting chiefly of a warehouse and quartz-mill, with a few adobe shanties.”
- Named for a rockThe dam was first called Bullhead Dam, for Bull's Head Rock, a formation that steamboat pilots used to find their way on the river. The camp that grew up around the work took the nickname Bullhead and served as headquarters for the project. The dam was later renamed for Arthur Powell Davis, and the lake rising behind it now hides nearly all of the rock.
- Hardy's toll road and mail sackHardy built and owned a toll road from Hardyville to Prescott, the new territorial capital, and raised Angora goats. On January 17, 1865, he took the job of the town's first postmaster, and he gets the credit for coming up with the riveted mail sack. In 1864 he was worth over $40,000, which made him the second-richest man in Arizona.
- Graves under cobblestonesHardyville Cemetery, on State Route 95, is the most important trace of the old river town left today. Its 17 graves still lie under heaps of cobblestones, just as they were first made, and the cemetery joined the National Register in 2001.
- Three towns, one name in 1984In 1970 Bullhead City was just six blocks on Highway 95, home to roughly a thousand people, and nearby Riviera had about 3,000. In 1984 voters in Bullhead City, Riviera and Holiday Shores chose to become one city, and they picked the name Bullhead City for its history.
- A regatta of 30,158The Bullhead City River Regatta has become the city's best-known event. Its 10th annual run, in August 2016, had a Pirates of the Colorado theme and drew 30,158 registered participants to the river.
