About Burlington Township, Burlington County, New Jersey

Burlington is a township of 23,983 people in Burlington County, facing Bristol, Pennsylvania, across the Delaware River. It started as a towne laid out by the West Jersey proprietors, and its name is a garbled form of Bridlington, a town in England.

The township dates to February 21, 1798, when New Jersey created its first 104 townships. Burlington City was reincorporated within the township's borders on March 14, 1851, taking part of the township's land with it.

  • A patent from King George IWatching Native women pound corn with wooden posts, she designed her own corn mill. She sailed to London in 1712, and in 1715 King George I granted the patent in her husband's name, since women could not hold patents. No colonist had an English patent before her. A second patent covered hats and bonnets of straw and palmetto leaves.
  • A clockmaker freed in 1794Peter Hill was born into slavery on July 19, 1767, on township land owned by Joseph Hollinshead Jr., a Quaker clockmaker. At 14 he was apprenticed to Hollinshead, who helped him start his own clock business and then set him free. Hill got his manumission certificate in 1794 and was certified free in 1795, the year he married the educator Tina Lewis.
  • Peter Hill's clocksHill made clocks at home until about 1814, when he moved his shop to Mount Holly. Only five of them survive, and one belongs to the National Museum of American History. He is buried in the township's Friends' burial ground.
  • Burlington Coat FactoryThe company began in 1972, when Henrietta Milstein convinced Monroe, her husband, to purchase a Burlington building that had been a factory outlet. Savings from her years as a librarian paid most of the $75,000 down payment. The business became the national off-price chain now known as Burlington Stores, and in 1988 it moved its headquarters from Burlington City into the township. Its offices and stores can push the township's daytime population to 35,000.
  • A platinum debut in 2019The country singer Breland grew up in the township, where his parents, both ordained ministers, filled their home with gospel music. His first single, "My Truck," came out in 2019, and a later remix with Sam Hunt was certified platinum.
