About Florence, New Jersey
Florence is a township of 12,812 people in Burlington County, on the Delaware River across from Pennsylvania. In 1849 the newly formed Florence City Company planned the town's first streets and lots, and it oversaw the building of the Florence Hotel and a wharf on the river.
The land was still part of Mansfield Township in those years. On March 7, 1872, the New Jersey Legislature made Florence a separate township and named it for the Italian city of Florence. By then the sandy riverbanks were drawing summer visitors, and about 1872 Dr. Trall of Philadelphia opened a hydrotherapy center where guests could take the water cure.
- An ironworks from 1857Richard Jones founded the Florence Iron Works beside the Delaware in 1857. Ten years later Richard D. Wood took over the foundry, and under his ownership it became a mainstay of the local economy. The 1900 census showed that a large share of the township's workers relied on it for their jobs.
- Cable for the Golden GateCharles Roebling, a son of the engineer John A. Roebling, founded the factory village of Roebling inside the township. Its Kinkora Works belonged to John A. Roebling & Sons, and the steel and cable it made went into major suspension bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge.
- Elevator cables and a SlinkyThe Roebling mill also made elevator cables for tall buildings, among them the Chicago Board of Trade Building in Chicago and the Empire State Building in New York. Its wire also went into the original Slinky, so the same works supplied both famous landmarks and a classic toy.
