About Roebling, New Jersey

Roebling is a community of 3,585 people in Florence Township, Burlington County. Charles Roebling, a son of John A. Roebling, founded it in 1904 as a company town beside the steel mill of John A. Roebling's Sons Company, the Trenton firm known for steel wire and bridge cables. Construction began in 1905, and the company's own office staff designed and engineered every piece of it, from the mills to the stores to the workers' houses.

Swedes who already knew how to make steel arrived among the first, and they helped turn the new mills into working plants. Immigrants from Russia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Ireland and Lithuania followed, and these families organized congregations and built the churches that still stand at the edge of the business district.

  • Cables for famous bridgesWire rope made in Roebling helped carry three famous spans: the George Washington Bridge across the Hudson from Manhattan, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and the Hudson's Bear Mountain Bridge. When the town was documented for the National Register in 1978, older workers were still proud to point that out.
  • Elevators and the SlinkyThe mill, known as the Kinkora Works, turned out cables for the elevators in New York's Empire State Building, Chicago's Board of Trade Building and the Washington Monument. The company also supplied the wire for the original Slinky.
  • A historic district since 1978The company town survives as the Roebling Historic District, 76 acres holding 94 contributing buildings. It joined the National Register on May 22, 1978, honored for its town planning, architecture, industry and commerce, and for the immigrant families who made their lives there.
