About Glendora, New Jersey

Glendora is an unincorporated community of 4,784 people in Gloucester Township, Camden County. Its oldest building is a brick house with the year 1756 set in its chimney. During the Revolution the Gloucester County Militia made that house its military headquarters, and after the Battle of Red Bank it served as a hospital. Today it is known as the Hillman Hospital House.

  • Hessians on the marchAccording to tradition, Hessian soldiers on their way to the Battle of Red Bank forded Timber Creek near the Hillman Hospital House. The 18th century brick dwelling still stands, and it joined the National Register in 1977.
  • A summer colony by 1939The 1939 WPA guide to New Jersey found Glendora, then a place of 200 people, to be mostly a summer resort of cottages gathered around a small lake, with an amusement park. Once the season ended, the park and the few cottages sat empty all winter.
  • The Cookie Jar HouseGlendora's Cookie Jar House went up in the 1940s. Its unusual shape has earned it a reputation as one of the oddest homes in New Jersey.
