About Burlington, West Virginia

Burlington is a community of 131 people in Mineral County, where U.S. Route 50, the old Northwestern Turnpike, crosses Pattersons Creek. Thomas, Lord Fairfax had Patterson Creek Manor surveyed in 1738, and German and English families soon began to settle the land around the future village.

As the 19th century began, mills went up along Mill Creek and Patterson Creek, and the trade they drew turned the settlement into a village. A post office opened on September 24, 1827, and the turnpike reached Burlington in 1831, making it a market town for the farms around it. Many of the village's admired houses were built during those prosperous years, and in 1992 about 25 homes and businesses were listed together as the Burlington Historic District.

“The origin of Burlington's name remains a mystery. Some believe the town was named for settlers who came from some other place with the same name.”
National Register nomination, 1992
  • A stagecoach tavern, c. 1831John and Ruth Ann Vandiver built the Homestead, a Federal-style brick house, as a tavern for the stagecoaches rolling along the Northwestern Turnpike. It began with a side hall, and later additions gave it a center hall plan. The Homestead kept feeding and lodging travelers as an inn and restaurant until well into the middle of the twentieth century.
  • Six Civil War skirmishesUnion and Confederate troops clashed in or near Burlington at least six times in 1861 and 1863. Pennsylvania's Ringgold Cavalry fought the first three, beginning on September 2, 1861. The last came on November 16, 1863, about three miles south of town, when Union men from the 14th West Virginia Infantry and the 2nd Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade, met Confederate forces. Private William Gardner, Sergeant Samuel H. Morris and First Lieutenant George W. Hardman died there.
  • A children's home since 1913The Star of Hope Child Refuge was founded in 1913 by Dr. F.L. Baker, who lived in Burlington, and Rev. F.C. Rollman, the postmaster at nearby Elk Garden. It gave orphans a home and a school, so they would not be sent to the county poor farm or an orphanage.
  • A fruit railroad in 1911The Twin Mountain and Potomac Railroad built a freight station at Burlington in 1911 to carry fruit from the orchards on the surrounding mountains to Keyser. The line was short-lived, and the station is the only building left from it. It later served as the post office and now holds a branch of the Keyser-Mineral County Library.
  • Apple Harvest Festival since 1973Burlington started its Old Fashioned Apple Harvest Festival in 1973. Held every year on the first weekend of October, it has become the largest celebration of its type in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle.
