About Springfield, West Virginia

Springfield is a community of 455 people in northwestern Hampshire County, north of Romney on West Virginia Route 28. George Washington first came to the area in 1748, when he was part of a party surveying the lands that Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, held in the South Branch Potomac River Valley.

The settlement that grew up here was called Cross Roads. On December 16, 1790, the Virginia General Assembly turned it into the town of Springfield, on property owned by William and Samuel Abernethy. The new town was laid out in lots of a quarter acre each, and its name recalled the Battle of Springfield, fought in 1780.

  • The county's first stage lineIn 1830 the first stagecoach line in Hampshire County started running along the Springfield Grade. With coaches passing through, the town sat in a strong position to grow.
  • The Potomac Guards of 1861In June 1861 men from Springfield formed a company called the Potomac Guards to fight for the Confederacy, led by Captain Philip T. Grace. Two months later, on August 23, 1861, Union and Confederate forces fought a skirmish at Springfield.
  • Frenchwood, a brick houseFrenchwood, also known as the Springfield Brick House, stands at Route 28 South and Market Street. Captain John W. Shouse is said to have built the brick house around 1855, and it is being restored. Its National Register nomination was written in 2012.
