About Green Spring, West Virginia

Green Spring is a railroad town of 250 people in Hampshire County, on the Potomac River across from Maryland. The town gained importance in 1819, when the Virginia General Assembly ordered a public warehouse for tobacco set up at Cresap's warehouse, at the spot where the two branches of the Potomac meet. The Green Spring Train Station, dated 1882 to 1885, ranks among the town's most important historic sites.

The rails still matter here. The South Branch Valley Railroad ends at Green Spring and joins the old Baltimore and Ohio main line, today run by CSX. Its 52-mile line stretches south to Petersburg and carries freight mostly for the poultry industry.

  • Where the Potomac beginsThe North Branch of the Potomac starts at the Fairfax Stone and flows down to Green Spring. Here it meets the South Branch, and from this point on the river is the Potomac itself.
  • A governor born hereJohn Jeremiah Jacob was born in Green Spring on December 9, 1829. He represented Hampshire County in the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1869, then served as governor of the state from 1871 to 1877. He died in Wheeling on November 24, 1893, and was buried at Indian Mound Cemetery in Romney.
  • A private toll bridgeA one-lane, low-water bridge runs from Green Spring Road across the river to Maryland Route 51 in Oldtown, in Allegany County. Only 17 toll bridges in the country are privately owned, and this is one of them. Drivers pay $1.50 to cross.
