About Caballo, New Mexico
Caballo is a community of 77 people in Sierra County, set beside Caballo Lake on the Rio Grande. John Gordon and many of his relatives took up homesteads here in 1908, and the settlement was named for the mountains that rise to its east. The community got its own post office in 1916, eight years after the Gordons arrived.
- A reservoir built 1936 to 1938Between 1936 and 1938, crews raised an earthen dam on the Rio Grande to hold extra water and supply irrigation. The water backed up behind it to form Caballo Reservoir. That lake is now home to Caballo Lake State Park, which borders the community.
- Moved west for the lakeCaballo Dam was finished in 1938, and the lake that filled behind it forced the people of Caballo off their land. They did not abandon the town. Instead they rebuilt the community farther west, and today it stretches for over five miles, with its own fire department, businesses and homes.
