About Camp Croft, South Carolina
Camp Croft began as an Army base during World War II. From 1941 to 1946, it trained 60,000 soldiers each year. One trainee was Henry Kissinger, who became a citizen at the camp. He went on to serve as Secretary of State for President Nixon. The old base later became homes and Croft State Park.
Late in World War II, a prisoner of war camp opened at Camp Croft. The camp held almost 1,000 German prisoners. When the fighting ended, the Army gave up the base, and the land returned to civilian control.
