About Capulin, Colorado

Capulin is a community of 134 people in northern Conejos County, Colorado, in an area the National Park Service says was settled in the 1860s. Families from Ojo Caliente, New Mexico, founded the town itself in 1867, and by 1878 they had built a Catholic church of their own.

“St. Joseph's strengthened the religious life of the people of Capulin and the surrounding area of northern Conejos County by serving as the site of weddings, funerals, christenings, seasonal feasts, and other events.”
National Park Service, 2022
  • Named for the chokecherryCapulin is the word people in this region use for the chokecherry, and the founders gave that name to their town. When a post office opened here on August 10, 1881, it carried the same name.
  • A church its members builtThe town's first Catholic church went up in 1878. Years later its members led the push for a new building, and in 1912-13 they gave their own money, time and labor to raise St. Joseph's Church, with its cemetery beside it.
