About Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California

The MacKinnon family settled this farm country in 1875. In 1909 Boston developer J. Frank Cullen bought their land and began selling lots. His wife Esther was born in Cardiff, Wales. She talked him into naming the town after her home. Many streets got British city names too, like Oxford and Manchester.

The Cardiff Composer District has twelve streets named for musicians. Victor Kremer built it. He had been a music publisher and a film producer before he turned to real estate.
