About Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania
In 1777, Hessian prisoners helped put up buildings at the edge of Carlisle. Washington had captured them at Trenton, New Jersey. The buildings became known as Carlisle Barracks. One of them, the Guard House at the main entrance, still stood in 1886.
From 1879 to 1918, the post housed the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. It was the first boarding school set up away from a reservation. Its purpose was to assimilate Native American children into European-American culture. The school shut down once the United States entered World War I.
