About Carney, Maryland

Carney is a community of 29,363 people in Baltimore County, just northeast of Parkville. It carries the name of Thomas Carney, who came from Ireland in 1880 and first lived in Texas, Maryland, where he bought land along the Baltimore and Harford Turnpike. Around 1885 he moved his family to the corner where Harford and Joppa roads now cross and opened a general store there, which is thought to have been the turnpike's Eight Mile House.

Through the 1880s and 1890s the Carneys lived in the store itself. When the family outgrew it, Thomas Carney built a house on the hill behind it, finished around 1898. By 1915 a village named Carney had taken shape at that crossroads, and as the suburbs of Baltimore County spread, the family's land was sold off to buyers and developers.

  • The Great Carney Fire of 1911In 1911 two boys playing with matches in a patch of weeds behind Carney's Hotel on Harford Road started a fire that burned 700 acres. The flames spread across the land bounded by Harford, Joppa and Belair roads and Putty Hill Road. Fire companies came from Gardenville, Parkville, Hamilton, Towson and Roland Park. Nobody died, and the only reported injury was one firefighter's sprained ankle.
  • A house that movedThomas Carney's house of about 1898 first stood near today's Thornewood Court. Thirty-five years after it was built, it was moved to the corner of Joppa and Avondale roads, where it still stands and now holds a real estate office.
  • Cub Hill, the older villageCub Hill, the older village just to the north, is named for a land tract from the 1600s. It formed along the Harford Turnpike where Cub Hill Road crossed, and its three taverns included one that housed the post office. Its population reached about 150 by 1881, and as the 1900s went on, Carney spread out and surrounded it.
  • The Carney name lives onLong after the family land was sold, the Carney name stayed in use. Area businesses and clubs carry it, and so do two public institutions, the Carney Library and Carney Elementary School.
