About Carson, North Dakota

Carson is a city of 254 people and serves as the seat of Grant County. In 1907 Frank Carter, the brothers David and Simon Pederson and other pioneer businessmen founded North Carson, two miles north of today's city, because they expected the railroad to pass through that spot.

The Northern Pacific Railway was extended to the present site in 1910, and Carson was platted there that same year. The settlement grew enough to incorporate as a village in 1917, and it became a city fifty years later, in 1967.

  • Carter plus PedersonTownsite officials built the name Carson out of two local families. They took the first syllable of Carter, for Frank Carter, and joined it to the last syllable of Pederson, for the brothers David and Simon Pederson.
  • Almost named ZelmaBefore the name was settled, John Erickson proposed calling the town Zelma, after the daughter of a rancher who lived nearby. The townsite officials passed over his idea and chose Carson, the name made from Carter and Pederson.
