About Centennial, Colorado

Centennial is a city of 108,418 people in Arapahoe County, the 11th most populous municipality in Colorado. Before it became a city, this ground was unincorporated county land that included the Castlewood and Southglenn census areas. Taxes paid by businesses there covered most of Arapahoe County's services, including road work, and Greenwood Village kept annexing parts of it to grow its own tax base.

Residents answered by forming a city of their own. On September 12, 2000, 77% of voters approved incorporation and chose the name Centennial in the same vote, and the city became official on February 7, 2001. With more than 100,000 people, it was the largest incorporation in U.S. history at the time. Court cases later settled that the right to incorporate takes precedence over the right to annex, and in 2008 voters made Centennial a home rule city by roughly 2-to-1.

“Mayor Randy Pye was first to take his oath of office at the Arapahoe County Justice Center, and within minutes convened Centennial's first City Council meeting amid flashing cameras.”
The Denver Post, 2001
  • Named for the Centennial StateColorado entered the Union in 1876 as the 38th state, one hundred years after the Declaration of Independence, which earned it the nickname the Centennial State. The voters who created the city in 2000 picked that name for it.
  • An airport older than the cityCentennial Airport, once called the Arapahoe County Airport, sits next to the city on unincorporated county land. It wasn't named for the city at all: the airport was there more than 30 years before Centennial existed.
  • Colorado's first IKEAIn 2008 IKEA picked Centennial for its first store in Colorado. The store opened on July 27, 2011, as the second-largest IKEA in the United States, and the city named it its Project of the Year in 2011.
  • Home of Gamma Phi BetaGamma Phi Beta, the first women's organization to call itself a sorority, keeps its international headquarters in Centennial. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association and Arrow Electronics, the largest company headquartered in Colorado, are based in the city as well.
