About Acres Green, Colorado

Acres Green is an unincorporated community of 2,922 people in Douglas County, with Lone Tree on three sides and Highlands Ranch on the west. Morris General contractors began building it in 1971 on old pastureland just below County Line Road, close to Interstate 25, and it became the first housing development in northern Douglas County. The sixth and last section of homes was finished 12 years later.

An energy boom in Denver drove the building. Downtown was about 20 miles away, but a few miles north along I-25 the Denver Technological Center was expanding, and the Inverness office complex across the interstate had only just begun. By the late 1970s the neighborhood had a park, an elementary school and a library, yet it stood alone for years, with the closest development over two miles north until the early 1980s.

  • A library lost to SH 470Acres Green built its library in 1979. In the mid-1980s the SH 470 highway was laid between the neighborhood's homes and County Line Road, and because the library stood in its path, it was torn down.
  • Older than Highlands RanchMost of Acres Green was already finished before Highlands Ranch got started to the west in the early 1980s. The new community's growth didn't reach the open land west of Acres Green until the early 1990s.
  • Voted to stay unincorporatedA technology boom in the mid-1990s filled the empty land nearby. The Meridian office complex went up to the southeast, Park Meadows mall drew stores all around, and new subdivisions to the south became Lone Tree. That city incorporated in 1995 and nearly surrounded Acres Green, but its homeowners voted against annexation, so the community is still part of unincorporated Douglas County.
