About Highlands Ranch, Colorado
Highlands Ranch is an unincorporated community of 103,444 people in Douglas County, south of Denver. Samuel Allen Long bought a 40-acre homestead here in 1884, and over the years his farm grew to 2,000 acres. He had finished a stone farmhouse by 1891 and called it Rotherwood, after a farm he knew as a boy. He was known across Colorado for dryland farming, raising orchards and crops with no water but the rain.
In 1978 the Mission Viejo Company bought a large tract of the old ranch land. It planned a new suburb like its first one in Mission Viejo, California, with schools, recreation centers, a town center, a library and a winding green belt of open land. The first houses went up near South Broadway in 1981, and Northridge Elementary, the first public school, opened in 1982. By the 10th anniversary in 1991, 17,000 people lived here.
- Castle IsabelIn 1898 the ranch passed to John W. Springer, who built the Highlands Ranch Mansion around Long's farmhouse, with work lasting until 1904. He enlarged the property to 10,000 acres, and for a time the house was called Castle Isabel, for his second wife, Isabel Patterson Springer. Springer started selling off pieces of the ranch in 1911. Shea Homes paid for a renovation of the mansion from 2010 to 2012.
- Named for Hereford cattleOil man Waite Phillips bought the ranch in 1920 and called it Phillips Highland Ranch, for the Highland Hereford cattle he raised. Lawrence Phipps bought it in 1937, gave it the name Highlands Ranch, and kept cattle and hunted fox on the land. After Phipps died in 1976, oil company owner Marvin Davis bought it.
- First legal settler in 1870Stephen H. Long's expedition passed through in July 1820, the first recorded visit by American or European explorers. Ranchers came to the Denver area from 1859, but the dry land kept people from staying for good. On February 25, 1870, Curtis H. Field bought land from the U.S. government just west of Santa Fe Drive, the area's first legal settlement.
- Kendrick Castillo WayOn May 7, 2019, Kendrick Castillo, a senior at STEM School Highlands Ranch, tackled a gunman during a shooting at the school and was killed while shielding his classmates. The community renamed Lucent Boulevard as Kendrick Castillo Way, put up a memorial to him in Civic Green Park and started a scholarship fund in his name.
