About Center, Texas
Center is the Shelby County seat, situated 17 miles from Louisiana and 118 miles north of Beaumont. Its county seat status was secured in 1866 after residents moved county records there following a disputed election. The city incorporated in 1893, and the 2020 census recorded 5,221 residents.
- Donated TownsiteJ. C. and Margaret A. Wilson and Jesse Amason donated land for the town in 1856 or 1857.
- Historic CourthouseThe Shelby County Courthouse, built after an 1882 fire, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
- Railway ConnectionThe Gulf, Beaumont and Great Northern Railway reached Center by 1904.
- Twentieth-Century GrowthCenter's population increased from 1,684 in 1910 to 5,827 in 1980.
- Timber and PoultryDuring the 1980s, local manufacturers processed timber and poultry products.
