About Shelbyville, Texas

Shelbyville is a community of 100 people in Shelby County. It sits on State Highway 87, seven miles southeast of Center, near the Toledo Bend reservoir. Families from the Nashville, Tennessee, region settled the area in the 1820s, and they first called their community Nashville after the place they had left behind.

Shelbyville was once the seat of Shelby County, and a Republic of Texas post office was open here by 1843. The town kept the seat until 1866, when a bitter contest over it ended with the county records secretly hauled away one night. After that, Center became the new seat of Shelby County.

  • Renamed in 1837The Congress of the Republic of Texas gave the community its present name in 1837. The new name honored Isaac Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as governor of Kentucky.
  • Heart of a frontier feudShelbyville was the flashpoint of the Regulator-Moderator War. Most of the major battles in that feud were fought in the town itself or close by.
  • A peak of 600 in 1929Shelbyville had 150 people in 1884, and that number doubled by 1914. The town reached an estimated 600 in 1929, then lost half its people during the Great Depression. It climbed back to 550 by the late 1940s before falling to 215 by the late 1980s, the same count the 2000 census gave.
