About Centerville, Montana
Centerville is a small community of 32 people in Cascade County, 14 miles southeast of Great Falls. It lies in the valley where Cottonwood Creek joins Sand Coulee Creek, which flows north to the Missouri River.
The town got its name from where it stood. It sat halfway between two neighboring coal towns, Stockett and Sand Coulee, and Centerville soon became a coal town of its own.
- Stainsby-Latham Mine, 1905The Stainsby-Latham Coal Mine was developed at Centerville in 1905. It put the town in the same line of work as its neighbors, Stockett and Sand Coulee.
- Coal for Anaconda's smelterIn 1914 the Anaconda Company bought Centerville's Lockray Mine. The company wanted the coal as fuel, so coal dug here went to fire its smelter at Anaconda.
- On the census map in 2020Centerville was first listed as a census-designated place shortly before the 2020 census. That count found 32 people living in the village along Secondary Highway 227.
